Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining Your Marriage License for a Destination Wedding in Hawaii

A destination wedding or elopement on one of Hawaii's gorgeous beach seems like such a dream! But coordinating all of the details around your special day can be overwhelming, especially from thousands of miles away. Here at Kona Wedding Officiant, we want to help you enter your wedding planning era with confidence!

For this reason, we've written up a step-by-step how to guide to obtaining your marriage license in the Aloha State. Hawaii is relatively one of the simplest states to obtain a Marriage License.  Most of the work can be done online.

You and your future Mr. or Mrs. will need to complete your application, pay the online fee of $65, choose Kona Wedding Officiant as your marriage performer, and you're well on your way to that dream beach wedding!

You do have the option to fill out the application when you get to Hawaii, just make sure your licensing agent isn't closed for any holidays, as you both need to go there to finalize and pick up your license in person.

The online application is valid for a full year after submission. To complete the licensing process, make an appointment to visit a marriage licensing officer at the Department of Health Office of Vital Records on the island where you are staying. You and your partner will need to appear in person and the agent will need specifics, such as your parents’ birthdays and their middle names, so acquire that information ahead of time. You will leave this appointment with your paper Marriage License Worksheet. Bring this to the ceremony so that it can be filed by your officiant after it is signed by all parties. Your officiant is required to file it online within three days of your ceremony. It will be available to you online within a few days using your Locator ID and mailed to you within 4-6 weeks.

Once the licensing agent hands you the actual paper license, it is only valid for thirty days. After 30 days, your license will expire, and you will need to complete the whole application over again and pay another portal fee.
