If you’re dreaming of an off-the-beaten-path wedding location in Hawaii, few places are as magical and untouched as Mackenzie State Recreation Area in Pāhoa, Hawaii. Nestled along the rugged Puna coastline on the Big Island’s east side, Mackenzie offers a raw, natural beauty that feels worlds away from the crowds — the perfect choice for intimate elopements and small family group weddings.

One of Our Black Sand Beach Hawaii Wedding Locations
Mackenzie is one of our featured Black Sand Beach Hawaii wedding locations, known for its striking coastal lava cliffs, black sand coves, and tall ironwood trees. This park feels secluded and peaceful, surrounded by the rhythmic sounds of crashing waves and rustling trees — creating a serene, almost otherworldly atmosphere for your ceremony.
It’s a place where couples can truly connect with nature and each other, with dramatic ocean views and soft, filtered light that make for absolutely stunning wedding photos.

Permit Details – What You Need to Know
To hold a wedding ceremony at Mackenzie State Recreation Area, the Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) requires a Special Use Permit. This permit is free, but it must be applied for at least 45 days in advance of your ceremony date.
Our Kona Wedding Officiant® team is happy to assist you with this process — we’ll help ensure all forms are submitted correctly so your day can unfold seamlessly and stress-free.

When to Have Your Ceremony
Because Mackenzie sits on the lush, tropical side of the island, mornings are typically the best time for weddings, with calmer weather and softer light. We most often recommend a 9:00 AM ceremony, as afternoon and sunset hours can bring more rain and humidity.
That said, we’ve also captured some truly breathtaking sunset weddings here — it’s all part of the adventure! Since our adventure weddings are rain or shine, we always suggest bringing an umbrella, a change of clothing, and a sense of adventure.

Travel Tips – Getting There
Mackenzie State Recreation Area is located about a 3-hour drive from Kona, so we recommend couples stay overnight in Hilo or Pāhoa for convenience. This area of the island is remote and far from services, so plan ahead:
Bring water, snacks or a packed lunch, and a full tank of gas.
There is a pavilion and a restroom on-site, but note that the restroom is a simple outdoor privy (non-flush toilet) — so it’s best to come prepared before your ceremony.
Despite its rustic nature, this location offers incredible beauty and privacy. Couples who choose Mackenzie often say it feels like discovering a secret piece of Hawai‘i — and once you experience it, you’ll understand why.
