Kailua-Kona is, without exaggeration, the wedding capital of the Big Island. More ceremonies happen along this 20-mile stretch of coastline than anywhere else on Hawaii Island, and there are real reasons why.
Our team has officiated over 3,000 weddings in and around Kailua-Kona since 2017, and we want to share what we know about getting married here, from neighborhood to neighborhood, beach to beach, morning to sunset.
This is the local guide we wish every couple had before they booked.

Why Kailua-Kona Is the Wedding Capital of the Big Island
Three things make Kailua-Kona the most popular wedding region on the island.
First, the weather. The Kona coast sits in the rain shadow of the Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes, which means it is reliably sunny and warm year round. While East Hawaii gets the rain, West Hawaii gets the sunsets. For couples flying in from the mainland or international destinations, that weather consistency is a huge advantage.
Second, access. Kona International Airport (KOA) sits just seven miles north of downtown Kailua-Kona. Most of our wedding beaches are within a 15 to 25 minute drive of the airport. Your guests can land, change clothes, and be at the ceremony within an hour if they need to be.
Third, the coastline. The Kona side of the Big Island has more accessible, photogenic, swim-friendly beaches than any other region of Hawaii Island. From soft white sand at Kuki'o Beach to the dramatic lava rock shores at Old Kona Airport Beach, your ceremony options stretch for miles.
Kailua-Kona Wedding Neighborhoods, Explained
Kailua Village (Downtown Kona)
The historic heart of Kailua-Kona. This is where you will find Ali'i Drive lined with restaurants, shops, and oceanfront condos. Wedding beaches in this area include Old Kona Airport Beach Park and La'aloa Beach (Magic Sands). Best for couples who want to be walking distance from dining, nightlife, and shops.
Keauhou (South of Downtown Kona)
About 10 minutes south of Kailua Village, Keauhou is quieter, residential, and home to the Sheraton Kona and a number of vacation rental complexes. Holualoa Beach and the nearby coves are popular ceremony spots. Excellent for couples wanting a more peaceful base.
North Kona and the Kohala Coast
North of the airport, the coastline transforms into resort country. Mauna Lani, Hualalai, Waikoloa Beach Resort, Hapuna, and Mauna Kea Beach all line this stretch. Wedding beaches here include Kuki'o Beach, Kikaua Point Park, Mahaiula Bay, Pauoa Bay, Waikoloa Beach, Hapuna Beach, and Mauna Kea Beach. Best for guests staying at luxury resorts and couples wanting world-class scenery.
Holualoa (Upcountry Kona)
Just 15 minutes uphill from downtown Kailua-Kona, Holualoa is the artsy, cooler coffee-country town above the coast. While we do not host beach ceremonies here, Holualoa is a charming place to stay before or after your wedding, and many couples take engagement or anniversary photos in the coffee farms and galleries.

The Best Kailua-Kona Wedding Beaches

Old Kona Airport Beach: Iconic Kona setting, walking distance to downtown, lava rock and grass.
Holualoa Beach: Quieter, intimate, hidden coves.
Mahaiula Bay: Remote, white sand, requires a short drive on a rugged road. Great for adventurous couples.
La'aloa Beach (Magic Sands): Small beach with stunning sunsets, can be busy in afternoon.
Honl's Beach: A locals favorite, often less crowded than others in town.
Coconut Grove Beach: Lined with palm trees, intimate feel, midday and morning friendly.
Kua Bay: Bright turquoise water, white sand, slightly more remote.

How a Kailua-Kona Wedding Compares to Hilo or Volcano
If you are weighing Kailua-Kona against other regions of the Big Island, here is the honest take:
Kailua-Kona is sunnier, drier, more developed for tourism, and offers more lodging options. Best for traditional beach weddings.
Hilo and East Hawaii are greener, lusher, and rainier. Best for waterfall and rainforest elopements.
Volcano Village is cooler, dramatic, and unique. Best for couples wanting otherworldly volcanic scenery and a small town vibe.
Most couples who choose Kailua-Kona do so because it delivers the classic Hawaii wedding image with the practical advantages of weather and access.
