If you’re dreaming of a wedding day that feels like a secret—where it’s just the two of you, the ocean breeze, and a quiet stretch of Big Island coastline—Mauʻumae Beach might be your perfect elopement spot. Tucked away along the Kohala Coast, this hidden gem offers soft sand, crystal water, and an authentic “just us” experience that couples fall in love with instantly.

But Mauʻumae isn’t just beautiful—it’s an adventure.

Getting to Mauʻumae Beach: What Couples Should Know

In 2021, the small access bridge leading directly to Mauʻumae Beach burned down, and it has not yet been rebuilt. Because of this, there is no direct vehicle access to the beach. Instead, couples will reach this location via a 0.5-mile coastal trail from Spencer Beach Park.

This trail is rocky, uneven, and exposed to full sun, making it important to arrive prepared:

  • Expect a moderate hike on uneven terrain

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes (you can swap to barefoot or wedding shoes once you arrive)

  • Bring water and sunscreen

  • Sunset elopements may require walking back in low light, so consider timing carefully

  • There are no restrooms at Mauʻumae Beach

These access conditions mean Mauʻumae isn’t the right choice for everyone—but for the couples who love a bit of wilderness and privacy, it’s idyllic.

Why Couples Love Mauʻumae

Because vehicle traffic is no longer possible, very few visitors make the journey. The result?

✨ A private, deeply secluded beach🌿 Quiet, untouched landscape perfect for elopements🌊 Undisturbed coastal views and soft sandy shoreline💍 An authentic Hawaiʻi experience far from crowds

This is not your average beach wedding location—it feels like your own private paradise at the end of the trail.

Black Sand Beach Vibes, Adventure Elopement Energy

While Mauʻumae is known for its soft sand and tranquil setting, the journey to get there gives this location the same sense of adventure couples seek in Hawaiʻi's black sand beach elopements—remote, rugged, and unforgettable.

If you want a wedding day that feels more like a shared expedition than a staged photo moment, Mauʻumae is a dream come true.
